M2216: „Applied Microbial Ecology & Sustainability“

Modern agriculture and industry often rely on chemical inputs and processes that can be environmentally damaging. For example, heavy use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides has raised concerns about long-term environmental impacts. In response, biologically driven approaches are gaining traction: microbial communities offer sustainable alternatives for enhancing crop productivity and environmental remediation. Through this course, students will learn how microbes contribute to sustainable development goals such as improving soil health, reducing pollution, and mitigating climate change and how to leverage these microbial processes in biotechnological applications. The module emphasizes practical lab proficiency and ecological insight, preparing students to apply microbiome research in solving real-world sustainability problems.
